Warming up

June 1, 2009

Today we, as a group, finally warmed up to the locals and they warmed up to us. Walking from the Japanese house to Suncokret you're always bound to run into at least five locals on your way. As Americans (and Canadians!) we stick out SO much. If you lined us up with the locals you'd be able to pick us out, no problem. So when we arrived, it was very obvious that we were the out-of-towners. Haha :)

Along with the locals, the kids were finally warming up to us. The first day was hard to click with them because they were shy, and we were new. The most outgoing of the group were definitely Antonija, Antonio, and Nemanja.

The kids in general were friendly, and very excited to have us there. Today we painted the gazebo foundation, weeded and picked up trash around Suncokret. We made it into a game - everyone got a garbage bag and whatever team that could fill theirs first won.

Nemanja added me on Facebook. Everyone here has them, even the younger teenagers - it's not solely for high schoolers and college students, which is normal for the U.S. generally speaking. They also love to play video games and poker on Facebook. Besides Facebook, the kids seem to be on YouTube all the time. Mario told me it was where he learned to swear in English!

They also love to play foosball - it's a great icebreaker, too, when you don't know one of the kids at the center very well. Get them to play a game, and they will love you!

Later, we formed some volleyball teams and played a few rounds. The Croats/Serbs are SO much better at all the sports we've played them in. Mario made sure to remind me that I was "horrible" at volleyball and that I should not play... Haha :)

After we'd play volleyball for awhile, we'd leave and usually it'd be around sunset. I loved walking home seeing this :)
