Exploring the world

June 2, 2009

Katherine took a couple of us on a hike up the gravel road from the Japanese house.

When you get to the top, there is an amazing view of the Croatian countryside.

After that, we headed to the center. The two things that I look forward to the walk every day are

Bobby, our favorite pup in all of Croatia

and fresh, wild strawberries. Yum!

Later, Jamie, Marie, and I were curious about the surrounding area and Luka, one of the older boys, took us on a walking tour of Gvozd. We started at Suncokret and started walking back behind the center, where the view is beautiful.

And I also saw this tree that had the most AMAZING bark!

We walked along the road and looked at the houses along the street.

Luka's English was pretty advanced, so it was easy to talk to him after he opened up. He was a little shy at first, but he told us a little more about himself after awhile. I asked him if he liked school and he explained to me that he didn't like it because it was an hour there and back every single day. It's a shame that the school is an hour away, because the amount of time to get there can negatively affect a kid's attitudes about school - and education is so important in the growth of any child. But he was also excited, because he was almost done with highschool. :)

After we got back from our walk, we played with the kids. We taught them how to play capture the flag, made volcanoes (it was a big hit!), and made paper plate flowers for everyone to decorate, and hang on the wall for a "garden".

Volcano time!
