The Town On Four Rivers

June 6, 2009

Because the center is normally closed during the weekend, we decided to take a day trip to Karlovac, a town about an hour west of Gvozd. Karlovac is known in Croatia as the city of parks and the town on four rivers because, obviously, there are four rivers including the Mrežnica, the Korana, the Kupa, and the Dobra, that surround the city. It was exciting to get out of Gvozd and see some more of surrounding Croatia - I think we were all anxious to explore more of the country. Half of the girls took the bus, and some of us hitched a ride with Ljubisa. He was our tour guide - he knows the city well, because he goes to college there.

The countryside flew past my window, but I still could get a taste of what Croatia looked like. It was hard for me to fathom that a the war between the Croats and Serbs had ripped apart many towns and damaged so many homes and other buildings. Karlovac is no exception either - the damage was very apparent everywhere you turned.

Karlovac is really a beautiful city. The buildings have very interesting architecture, and they're so old! At some points it's hard to realize how old some European cities really are, especially compared to America.

There was this huge group of people playing instruments and singing! It was amazing! I loved it

I absolutely love all the café bars in Croatia; it seems to add a lot of character to the cities and allows for a place for people to mingle while enjoying the outdoors.

Me, downtown Karlovac!

After a few hours exploring the city, we went back to Gvozd to watch the kids play their soccer game.

Tomorrow we go to Topusko!
