June 9, 2009

We walked everywhere in Gvozd, which I loved. I loved seeing all the flowers, houses, and the hills in the distance everyday. Damir took us to the area a little ways out of town where the kids go swimming - our job for the day was to weed and clean the area so it was safe and clear for them.

Many buildings were damaged in the war that happened between 1991-1995, and it was very noticeable in Gvozd. Besides damaged buildings, there is/was a lot of graffiti. At one point, before we ever volunteered at Suncokret, there was ethnic slurs written with spray paint all over the side of the building right across from the center. Maja and Predrag made it a project to cover it, and now there is a mural in place of the graffiti.

Everyone was very excited today to see their end results of their tyedying job! The kids loved seeing their shirts, and how they turned out. The shirts that the volunteers tyedyed were left at Suncokret for the other kids who weren't there to tyedye their own shirts.

After our day at the center, we stopped at the restaurant to get a drink. Predrag was already there, so we spent some time chatting with him! He's always so fun to talk to, although his English isn't the best, he still knows how to get his humor across. I just love him!

We also perused the grocery store for something to make for dinner, but something else caught our eyes: the LITER bottles of Karlovacko! We were amazed.
